Celebrates: February, 15 (Praesentation Domini )

Jesus Christ was born more than two millennia ago. And now the Holy Scriptures and other religious literature are the only source of information about the earthly path of the Savior. However, why is it the only one? After all, there are icons that contain graphic information about those great events that largely determined the path of human development. The Candlemas icon is one of those images that not only show us the face of Jesus and Mary, but demonstrate the plot of one of the events described in the Gospel of Luke. This episode is widely reflected in all Christian iconographic traditions, and the Presentation of the Lord can be safely considered one of the most important Orthodox holidays.
Who is depicted on the Candlemas icon The Candlemas icon depicts one of the most iconic episodes related to the infancy of Jesus. According to Jewish custom, each family had to bring their firstborn to the temple on the 40th day after birth - for dedication to God. This action was accompanied by a redemptive sacrifice in the form of a lamb and a dove (sometimes two pigeons). So did the Holy Family, bringing the infant Jesus from Bethlehem to the temple in Jerusalem. And in the temple they were met by Simeon (later called the God-Receiver) and the prophetess Anna. They were not afraid of Herod's anger and wished to observe the ancient custom. It was this plot that formed the basis of the feast of Candlemas and its iconography (that is, the meeting of Elder Simeon and the Lord). Subsequently, it received several interpretations, but we will talk about this later. Simeon the God-receiver has been translating biblical texts into modern languages for many years. And somehow, in one of the parables, he met a prediction that the Virgin would give birth to a Son. Simeon thought that an actual error had crept into the text and corrected the word "virgo" to "wife". However, a sign appeared to him so that he would not make changes: the prediction was transmitted correctly.

Blessed by the clergy at  Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.

This icon is a high-resolution lithography print on hardboard, embellished with light-reflecting gold and silve foil.
