The original is kept at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos. The earliest miracle associated with it dates back to 807, when the monastery was attacked by pirates who had previously bribed a monk to open the gate for them. Three other monks who had offended God with their sins were standing at the gate, unaware of the attack, and were preparing to open the gate as soon as the fourth monk turned the key. But they heard the voice of the Mother of God telling them to keep it closed. She had interceded for the sinners before the Lord, and He let them spare their lives.
