The saint is depicted holding a scroll in his hand, which reads, "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is nigh."

We revere John the Baptist as the greatest Old Testament Prophet who foretold the coming of Christ, preached His kingdom to the people, baptized Christ and was beheaded in revenge for his criticism of King Herod.

Saint John the Baptist intercedes for every man and woman looking to God and aspiring to follow His way. We turn to him in our prayers for a happy marriage, success in child-rearing and help in our work and life endeavours.

Commemorated on March 9, June 7 (uncovering of his holy head), and July 7 (the saint's birthday).

Materials: egg tempera, genuine gold leaf (23kt), solid lime wood panel reinforced with horizontal oak support bars, varnish
Technique: egg tempera, gilding, hand engraving, miniature

The icon is painted using traditional technique - egg tempera on wood. For the background we use 23 karat genuine gold leaf. 
The wood board is traditionally covered with a linen cloth and several layers of gesso (levkas). At the end the board is sanded to a smooth finish. After the painting process is completed, several layers of varnish are applied for long lasting protection.
