In 1978, Cindy met saxophonist John Tury. The result of their creative union was the Blue Angel group. Several demo versions of their own songs were recorded, and as a result, the tape with the recordings fell into the hands of the manager of The Allman Brothers Band, Steve Massarsky. Although he was not enthusiastic about these songs, he liked Cindy's voice. Massarsky eventually became the band's manager, buying out their contract for $5,000. Even then, Cindy was offered to sign a contract as a solo artist, but she refused, feeling a duty to the group.

In 1980, Blue Angel recorded their debut album at Polydor Records. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine recognized his cover as one of the 100 best new wave albums. Despite positive reviews from critics, sales were more than modest. There was a personnel reshuffle at the record company, and the new management refused to renew the contract with Blue Angel, since they did not have one clear hit. Because of this, the band members fired their manager. He filed a $80,000 lawsuit against them. The lawsuit bankrupted the band and it disbanded.

In 1978, she joined the group "Blue Angel" ("Blue Angel"), which released one album and went bankrupt. Cindy's first solo album "She's So Unusual" ("She's So Unusual" 1983) made her an idol for teenage girls, and in 1985 the 32-year-old star won a Grammy for Best New Female Singer. The album was certified 6x platinum but did not reach the top of the charts like Cindy's other albums. And only two of her songs topped the hit parade: "Time After Time" and the homosexual anthem "True Colors" ("True Colors" 1986), and also as part of the charity group "USA for Africa" ("USA for Africa") song " We Are The World".
