Legacy A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine (Uche Blackstock)
"Legacy" tells the compelling story of Dr. Uché Blackstock, a Black physician whose career in medicine illuminates the deep inequities present in the U.S. healthcare system. Growing up in Brooklyn with her twin sister, Oni, Dr. Blackstock was inspired by her mother, who led an organization of Black women physicians.
Despite following in her mother's footsteps and becoming a physician herself, Dr. Blackstock discovers the profound systemic inequities that affect Black patients and physicians. Through her experiences as an ER physician and academic, she becomes acutely aware of the barriers faced by Black communities in accessing quality healthcare.
"Legacy" is a poignant exploration of the intersection of racism and healthcare, combining personal memoir with a searing indictment of the healthcare system. Dr. Blackstock's journey serves as a call to action for health equity advocacy, especially in the wake of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
