About this item
Discover the Deadly Cost of Authenticity! By Kelsey Rae Dimberg
In Snake Oil, three women compete for power within Radical, a wellness startup led by the enigmatic Rhoda West. Rhoda, Silicon Valley’s favorite female CEO, has built a devoted following through her charismatic leadership and the promise of personal betterment. Her Instagram showcases her seemingly perfect life and promotes Radical’s high-demand products developed in its secretive lab, the Well.
Dani Lang is a die-hard believer, or “quester,” who found Radical when she hit rock bottom. Starting in an entry-level position, she sees Radical as her path to success. When Dani volunteers to test a controversial new supplement, she’s drawn deeper into the company, gaining access to Rhoda herself.
In contrast, Cecelia Cole, a disillusioned “quasher,” toils away in the Customer Worship department. Dealing with the entitled customers and Radical’s overly idealistic jargon, Cecelia is cynical about the wellness promises, especially since she suffers from a chronic illness that no Radical product could ever fix. She sees Rhoda as a hypocrite and the wellness brand as fraudulent.
As Rhoda prepares for a major fundraising round to push Radical into billion-dollar status, an anonymous Twitter account starts leaking scandalous details from inside the company. The tension escalates, culminating in a mysterious tragedy at a company event. With loyalties fraying and suspicion mounting, Rhoda’s carefully crafted image begins to unravel.
Mixing thriller elements with sharp satire of startup culture, Snake Oil delves into the lengths people go to achieve success and questions whether wellness promises are just another form of manipulation.
