The interior is red and has the faint smell of linseed oil, so it's authentic at least in application of the paint. Miniature painting in tempera on a japanned ground, with added gilding. Gold paint is used to detail the rich trappings, stars, horses... This miniature is very delicate and detailed! The composition is embellished with a golden ornamental frame. The box's sides are decorated with gold ornament. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black color is used to paint the exterior of the box while red color completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged on the top of the lid.  All chips, scratches, cracks and damage are displayed in the photo (see them at maximum resolution)

History reference: Russian folk art craft, which developed in the village of Palekh, Vyaznikovsky district, Vladimir province. The lacquer miniature is executed in tempera on papier-mâché. Usually, boxes, caskets, money boxes, brooches, paintings, ashtrays, tie pins, pincases, etc. are painted.
