History reference: 51st in a row World Championship under the auspices of the IIHF, held from 12 to 28 April 1986 in Moscow, USSR. Within the framework of the competition, the 62nd drawing of the European Championship took place. 8 national teams took part in the tournament. In the preliminary round, the national teams played one round with each other, after which the 4 strongest advanced to the final round, in which the winner of the tournament was determined without taking into account the previously scored points. The hosts of the competition, the USSR national team, became world champions, thus winning their twentieth title. Silver medals were won by the Swedish national team. Bronze medals went to the Canadian team.
