Pterodon emarginatus Vogel is a Brazilian Cerrado tree popularly known as "sucupira branca" (white sucupira), "faveiro", "fava de sucupira" (Sucupira bean) and "sucupira lisa" and has been used in folk medicine. Although the Sucupira seeds are commercially available at the medicinal flora market they are widely used in domestic medicine.
Sucupira has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, healing, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumor action. Its seeds are used to treat arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis, relieve pain due to excess uric acid and inflammation, heal skin wounds, eczema, and regulate blood sugar levels. It can exert anticancer action, especially in the case of prostate and liver cancer, since the seeds have antitumor and antioxidant activity.
***VERY IMPORTANT***: Sucupira is contraindicated for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 12 years old.
