The Poppy flower brass necklace pendant was made in Ukraine. 

Poppy has long been known in many countries. Archaeologists find it during excavations of Neolithic settlements in Switzerland, and in Italy near Savoy and Milan. As an agricultural crop, poppy was grown in Babylon, Syria, Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Arab merchants traded poppies in the VII-VIII centuries in India and China.

In Ukrainian mythology, the poppy has many meanings. It is a symbol of the sun, the infinity of existence and the transience of life, lush beauty,  pride, sleep, poison, a talisman against evil power, as well as a Cossack boy, blood, death. This flower is often mentioned in Ukrainian folk songs and thoughts, especially of the Cossack era.

Our ancestors equated the poppy with the transience of girlish beauty, because the fragile petals fall off as easily as a woman's youth quickly fades. They said: "A girl is like a poppy flower." Also, the flower was considered a symbol of fertility and a strong family, since each flower contains more than seven hundred seeds.  It was believed that the consecrated poppy, poured under the threshold, had the ability to prevent people with evil intentions from entering the house.
