Seed hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) has been cultivated by humans for about 10,000 years to produce textile fiber and edible oil. It is one of the most ancient agricultural crops in the history of mankind. In pre-revolutionary Russia, cannabis crops reached one million hectares and stretched from the southern regions of the country to the northern borders of agriculture. Called lean, hemp oil was the main source of edible vegetable oils for the population.

The high interest in hemp oil in the world is due to its optimal composition of fatty acids, which makes hemp oil valuable for nutrition. Unbalanced intake of gamma-linolenic acid into the body can lead to increased synthesis of prostaglandins and, as a result, to undesirable consequences for the human body. The ratio of linoleic and linolenic acids in hemp oil is optimal – the same as in the "fat depot" of a person, and is 3:1.

Linoleic and gamma-linolenic acids contained in hemp oil are "omega-6" fatty acids, and alpha-linolenic and stearic (WBC-6,9,12,15 octadecatetraenoic) are "omega-3" fatty acids. Stearic acid is interesting because it is practically not found in other vegetable oils with rare exceptions. The composition of hemp oil includes monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and other terpene-like components that cause its specific "nutty" flavor. They play an important role in the process of metabolism, participate in the regulation of blood pressure, gastric acid secretion and in many other physiological processes important for human health. This oil is especially useful for people suffering from atherosclerosis, hypertension, diseases of the digestive system.

Nutritionists consider hemp oil as an effective means of reducing the level of "bad" cholesterol in the blood.

The nutritional and physiological value of hemp oil is also determined by the amount and composition of tocopherols (vitamin E), which are natural antioxidants.

The seed oil obtained from cultivated hemp does not contain toxic compounds and narcotic substances.
