Veles is the Slavic god of wisdom, poetry and the afterworld. The latter is evident from the etymology of his name (‘vel’, ‘vol’ are Indo-European roots denoting death). Veles is the shepherd of heavenly flocks - souls in heaven, and the patron of poers and poetry.
