Monarda is a valuable plant for humans, its beneficial properties were already noticed by ancient Indians: the leaves of the plant were already used to treat wounds and skin infections, medicinal monarda tea relieved headaches and fever, helped with colds, monarda was also used as a general stimulant.

Products of monarda are used even today in official and folk medicine as a subsidiary treatment and for prevention of radiation sickness, anemia, asthma, tuberculosis, pneumonia, otitis, for treatment of burns and eczema, for prevention of respiratory diseases and flu.

Not so long ago, monarda attracted the attention of scientists. The study of the chemical composition of monarda essential oil was carried out in Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry SB RAS, with the participation of the Central Siberian Botanical Garden SB RAS and its Altai branch, as well as the department of organic chemistry of Novosibirsk State University. 
The study of the chemical composition of monarda revealed biologically active substances with strong antiseptic action against pathogenic bacteria, fungi and protozoa.
