A lovely blue and white stylised porcelain rooster or chicken. Made in the former USSR by the pottery collective Gzhel that was formed in the village of the same name that has long been famous for its clays, the Gzhel potters are famous for having developed a white earthenware in the 1830s called faience, which was of a quality that rivalled the creamware being produced in England at the time. This was followed by the acquisition of porcelain, which at the time was a heavily guarded Chinese secret, which is fired to a similar temperature as stoneware, but unlike stoneware, it becomes a translucent white which makes it highly desirable.
In excellent condition, with a stunning handpainted blue decoration on a brilliant white ground, this bird could take pride of place in any china cabinet or just sitting on its own.
It stands 9 cm high, 8 cm long and approximately 4cm wide.
Vintage USSR porcelain 1970. Very good condition.
