Tikis (another name for Polynesian masks) were a characteristic tattoo among male warriors as well as hunters. Polynesians believed that tattoos with such intimidating motifs will protect the fighter, protect him from the evil eye or evil spirits. Note that the masks look in different directions - this symbolizes all-round protection.
