Description/history of the order:
ORDER OF MALTESE or ORDER OF ST. JOHN OF JERUSALEM
The history of this order began in 1070, when the Italian merchant Panteleon Maura from Amalfi founded a hospice
house for pilgrims at the hospital of St. John the Merciful in Jerusalem. Soon a brotherhood was formed here, called
care for the sick and wounded pilgrims. A little later, the brotherhood began to accept knights into its ranks, obliging them
protect pilgrims along the way. Thus arose the "Order of the horsemen of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem", the charter of which
was approved in 1132. Pope of Rome. In 1698 Ambassador of Peter I Sheremetev established direct
relations of the Russian state with the Order of Malta, and Sheremetev himself became the first Russian Knight of the Order.
In 1798, Paul I was elected Grand Master of the Order, but the importance of the Order in Europe by that time was significantly
decreased after the surrender of the order to the French squadron and the fall of Malta. From the former might of the Order
there was no trace left. After Pavel's death, the order ceased to exist as a Russian award.
