Description/history of the order:
Order of St. Andrew the First-Called
established in 1699 by Emperor Peter I in honor of the Apostle Andrew, the first preacher of Christianity in Russia.
The oblique St. Andrew's cross of blue enamel with the image of the crucified saint served as the badge of the order. The letters S A R P at the ends of the cross
mean: Sanctus Andreas Russiae patronus - St. Andrew, patron of Russia. Legislatively, the statute of the order was approved only in 1797.
According to this statute, every male infant who appeared in the imperial family became a holder of this order.
The award value of the order sounds in the motto chosen for it: "FOR FAITHFUL AND LOYALTY". The type of sign fixed by the law of 1797,
formed in the second half of the eighteenth century. Since 1797, diamond jewelry has become a legal sign of a particularly high
awards - as if the highest degree of the order. The Order of Andrei was the only one of the Russian orders that had a chain that was worn
instead of a blue ribbon only on especially solemn occasions.
