Josephine is not really a bra; rather, it is a stylization of an historical overbust corset with adjustable straps. This garment is made of thick cotton fabric; plastic bones inserted (whalebone or metal corset bones can be used). All edges are finished with bias tape made from the same fabric. It fastens at the back with hooks and eyes.

The height of the band under the bust is 4 cm. Thus, the fastener is below the usual level and this garment may be suitable for some open back dresses. The straps are slightly shifted towards the shoulders, which allows you to wear dresses with a more open neckline.

I do not use a conventional measurement system. The main measure that I use is the horizontal arc (HD), in centimeters (see the picture). Simply put, you need to take this measurement between the ends of the underwire through the protruding point of the chest, horizontally. The dimensions of my sewing patterns are according to this measurement (if your measurement of HD is 23 cm, then you need size 23). This enables an individual approach to the creation of patterns. In the usual way, the pattern is created according to the difference between two dimensions (bust and under bust girth), but within this framework a wide variety of shapes and sizes is possible.

Another important measure is the girth under the bust. This measurement is indicated in the pattern name. There is a file on how to adjust the pattern in accordance with your girth under the bust.

I use a system of individual measurements to create a personalized pattern because each person’s figure is unique. You can buy ready-made patterns according to the size described above (please note that measurements are in centimeters) in my shop.

Materials and supplies:

*Paper pattern;

*Sewing machine;

*Scissors;

*Sewing thread;

*Natural fabric (linen, cotton; 0.7 m of each type ̶ for the top and for the lining);

*Strap elastic (about 80 cm/32 inches); the strap width should match the size of your rings and sliders for secure straps that stay in place;

*Rings and sliders;

*Interfacing material (batting, etc);

*10 plastic corset bones or whalebone;

*Hook and eye closure;

*Bias tape maker to make the bias tape 12 mm (1/2 inch) wide; patchwork cutting mat and rotary cutter. If you don’t have these tools, you can do without them. Then you need to cut the fabric with scissors to make the bias tape, and do everything by hand
