Creating an icon is a complex process that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. It requires three to four days of meticulous preparation, from covering the wood board with multiple layers of gesso, sanding it down once dry and then painting on the image using traditional pigments mixed in egg tempera. To finish off this intricate work, gold leaf which has been mixed with gum arabic is applied to create a beautiful background before oiling or lacquering the work completes it all together.
