Sorbitol (sorbitol) is a sweetener, a hexatomic alcohol obtained by hydrogenation of glucose, with a sweet taste. Sorbitol is a food additive and is registered as E420.
In nature, sorbitol is found in mountain ash (in large quantities, as well as in apples, apricots, peaches, algae, higher plants; in industry, sorbitol is obtained from corn starch.

In 1868, a French scientist isolated sorbitol (le sorb in French means mountain ash). In 1929, scientists proved that sorbitol does not have a significant effect on blood glucose levels.

Application: production of dietetic foods and drinks (low calorie content);

pharmacology (a component of cough suppressants, laxatives and other drugs);

cosmetic industry (thickener and hygroscopic agent);

tobacco industry (used in the production of cigarettes);

biomass energy production.

In the human body, sorbitol is produced naturally and is poorly absorbed. Excessive levels of sorbitol at the cellular level cause cell dysfunction.
